The Iowa HBPA, we are Horsemen Helping Horsemen!

The Iowa HBPA is a non-profit 501(c)(6) trade association that represents all horsemen who run Thoroughbred horses within the state of Iowa, specifically at Prairie Meadows Racetrack.

Currently there are 1,200 members in the Iowa HBPA, comprised of individuals who have raced during the current and previous calendars years. The Iowa HBPA is also an affiliate member of the National HBPA which is based in Lexington, Kentucky. The National HBPA, which was established in 1940, represents approximately 30,000 owners and trainers in 23 states and Canada.

Iowa's Race Horse Industry Generates $264.6 Million Economic Impact

A new economic impact study from the University of Kentucky's Blueprint Kentucky highlights the tremendous contribution Iowa's race horse industry makes to the state's economy.

  • 2,346 jobs supported statewide
  • $176.4 million in labor income generated
  • Thoroughbreds account for nearly 68% of total industry output
  • When excluding Prairie Meadows direct operational contribution, Thoroughbreds account for 80.3%, Standardbreds, 15.5%, and Quarter Horses at 4.2%
